Akkha Masoor, Brown Lentil Curry made from organic lentils

Masoor Curry

Savor the rich and comforting flavors of Akkha Masoor, a traditional Indian dish made with whole red lentils. Each spoonful of this hearty and nutritious lentil curry offers a delightful blend of earthy spices and tender lentils, creating a wholesome and satisfying meal.

1 cup organic brown lentils (akkha masoor)

3-4 cups water

2 tablespoons organic ghee or oil

1 teaspoon cumin seeds

1 medium onion, finely chopped

2-3 garlic cloves, finely chopped

1/2 inch ginger, grated or finely chopped

2 medium tomatoes, finely chopped

1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)

1 teaspoon coriander powder

1 teaspoon garam masala

Salt to taste

Chopped fresh cilantro for garnish

1.Rinse the brown lentils thoroughly with water and soak them for 30 minutes to an hour.

2.Drain the soaked lentils and add them to a pressure cooker with 3-4 cups of water and a pinch of salt. Cook for 3-4 whistles or until the lentils are soft and tender.

3.In a separate pan, heat ghee or oil and add cumin seeds. When the seeds start to splutter, add the chopped onion and sauté until it turns golden brown.

4.Add the chopped garlic and ginger and sauté for 1-2 minutes until the raw smell disappears.

5.Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and mushy.

6.Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala. Mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes.

7.Add the cooked lentils and mix well with the masala. Adjust salt to taste and add more water if the curry is too thick.

8.Bring the curry to a boil and let it simmer for 5-10 minutes to allow the flavors to blend together.

9.Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve hot with rice or roti.
